Here in Northwest Houston, we experience average temperatures of high 80s and low 90s for the most part. Fewer than 100 days out of the year reach 90 degrees or higher, but it’s humid. Spending any time outdoors can lead to anyone being drenched in sweat. Thankfully, as a homeowner, you have a fantastic pool in the backyard for just such an occasion. As temperatures rise and the sun shines down, your swimming pool is ready for the kids and family. But, if your swimming pool has been ignored until this point, there could be something wrong.
Typically, you would hire a swimming pool technician to handle a pool leak, for example. If you don’t know a good pool company, or have a trusted plumber on speed dial, then you’re in luck. Many of today’s plumbing experts are happy to address a swimming pool leak. You’ll want to ask before scheduling professional leak detection and repair, though.Swimming Pool Leaks
Dealing with a swimming pool leak is a part of regular pool maintenance. Over the years, the foundation and material of the swimming pool may start to falter. Then, a leak will form. Of course, there’s also the PVC plumbing attached to the pool for drainage. Here is where a plumbing expert comes in handy.
A swimming pool leak, like a plumbing leak in your home, comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. You might have a small drip or a full-blown cascade of water. For a small drip, you’re likely in no serious rush. A small drip won’t drain the pool or cause any problems – unless that drip is directly onto the pool motor.
But a large leak is a problem. The water leak must be addressed promptly by replacing joints or cracked fittings. In some cases, the old PVC pipe and fittings must be cut out and replaced.
Underground Pool Leaks
If your swimming pool is underground, the PVC pipe is often not the cause of the leak. However, that’s not to say the pipes can’t leak whatsoever. The pipe can break from tree roots, settling or shifting soil, and freezing temperatures.
If you’re sure the leak is underground, a plumber can test the suspected line for pressure changes. But if the pipe is damaged, the ground will need to be excavated in certain areas to pull out the old, broken pipe and replace it with a new one. It’s a tricky job.
Typically, an underground pipe leak is most common on an old pool – 30 years or more.
